Play isn’t just about fun—it’s a crucial part of a happy, healthy life for our pets. Whether you have a playful pup, a curious cat, or small furry friends like rabbits and guinea pigs, engaging in play provides physical exercise, mental stimulation, and a fantastic way to bond. Here’s why play matters and some top toy recommendations, including some DIY options to keep things exciting!

Why Play Matters for Pets

Dogs thrive on play—it keeps them fit, mentally engaged, and strengthens their bond with you. Without enough playtime, dogs can become bored, anxious, and even destructive. Playing can also encourage and allow breed specific behaviours…Like getting a scent hound to use their nose, or encouraging small breeds to enjoy tunnels and problem solving!

Cats may have a reputation for being independent, but they love to hunt, chase, pounce and are incredibly athletic. Play helps satisfy their natural instincts, prevents obesity, and keeps their minds sharp.

Rabbits & Guinea Pigs need an enriched life too! They may not fetch like dogs, but they love to run, explore, chew, forage, they even get ‘zoomies’ when happy! Bored bunnies and guinea pigs can become depressed, overweight, or develop behavioural problems, so play and space is just as important for them!

The Science of Happiness: Play and Positive Chemicals

When pets engage in play and are able to express their natural and instinctive behaviours, their brains release feel-good chemicals such as dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins. These neurotransmitters help regulate mood, reduce stress, and create a sense of pleasure and satisfaction. Much like when we do something we love or are good at! A well-stimulated pet is a happy pet, and regular play can prevent anxiety, depression, and behavioural issues.

Play also triggers the release of oxytocin, often called the “love hormone.” This chemical is responsible for deepening the bond between pets and their guardians. It’s the same hormone that strengthens human relationships, making interactive play an essential activity for fostering trust and emotional connection.

Health Benefits of an Enriched Life

A well-enriched pet enjoys numerous health benefits, including:

  • Better physical health: Play keeps muscles strong, joints mobile, and weight in check.
  • Stronger immune system: Reduced stress levels from regular play contribute to better overall health.
  • Mental stimulation: Keeping pets engaged prevents cognitive decline and destructive boredom-driven behaviours.
  • Lower anxiety levels: Active pets are generally calmer and more content in their environment.

Interactive Play: Reducing Anxiety & Improving Behaviour

Engaging in interactive play is an excellent way to help pets overcome anxiety and behavioural issues. Pets that experience separation anxiety, nervousness, or hyperactivity can benefit from structured play sessions. Games like fetch, puzzle toys,  hide-and-seek and scent games encourage positive behaviour, reduce destructive tendencies, and offer an outlet for pent-up energy.

Interactive play also helps strengthen bonds, and encourages impulse control and focus, especially for dogs and cats. Training through play can redirect unwanted behaviours, making pets more grounded, confident, and well-adjusted in different environments. For small pets like rabbits and guinea pigs, enrichment activities that mimic natural foraging and exploration help reduce stress and promote overall well-being.

DIY Fun: Budget-Friendly Play Ideas!

You don’t need to spend a fortune to keep your pets entertained. Here are some simple DIY ideas to try:

Dogs: Take an old box, make sure your dog can reach inside to the bottom, fill with screwed up paper, cardboard, even material, and scatter treats in there, they will have to use their nose to track down the treats, and problem solve getting to them!

Cats: Cut holes in a shoe box to create a DIY puzzle feeder—place treats inside and watch them work to get them out, make it harder by including cat balls even lengths of string! Another great game for indoor cats is bring the outdoors in! A snuffle box with leaves, moss, rocks, even sticks can have interesting scents for indoor cats and keep them interested!

Rabbits & Guinea Pigs: Fill an empty toilet roll/paper towel tube with small treats, and pet safe herbs, fill the ends with hay and let them explore and have fun with it! Another great enrichment for small animals is taking some of their daily ration and splitting it up and putting in different places, at different levels (but still within reach) in the enclosure—cheap, fun, and great for their teeth and recycling!

Building a Strong & Trusting Relationship

Interactive play is one of the best ways to build trust between pets and their guardians. Pets learn that their human is a source of fun, safety, and engagement, creating a deeper bond over time. Regular play helps nervous or shy pets gain confidence and reinforces positive behaviours through shared activities.

By playing together, you communicate love, establish routines, and show your pet that they are a valued part of your life. This trust-based relationship leads to better overall behaviour, reduced stress, and a more enriching companionship for both you and your pet.
